Description

Villa Poseidon was built around the mid 19th century and was inhabited by one of the feudal landlords of the island at that time. These merchants and land barons became wealthy exporting the unique Vinsanto wine the island still produces. Trade brought wealth and wealth brought the Mansion Houses. Megalochori had a particularly strong link with the port of Odessa in Russia. Many of the church bells which still toll in the village today are from Russia and have a very distinct clarity.

Villa Poseidon now has the luxury of all modern conveniences including electricity and running water but, retaining the character and style of the house, few structural changes have been implemented.

This Villa is perfect for those ready to switch off their cell phones, put their feet up, and sit back and enjoy Santorini from a different perspective. The tourist attractions, including Fira and Oia, are only a short drive away.

Included in the price are: Taxes, one 5-seat car rental, two hours daily housekeeping, Concierge service and complementary cell phone.

Upon request at extra charge: Private chef service, grocery shopping and delivery, private masseuse, private tour guide and boat rental.

The imposing large wooden entrance gates of Villa Poseidon conceal a secluded and pretty private courtyard, complete with the recent addition of a swimming pool. Double doors lead directly from the courtyard into a spacious lounge and dining area with its superb high vaulted ceilings and original polished wooden floors. The two double bedrooms, one master and one smaller second bedroom, lead off from either side of the central living room. One bathroom, with modern amenities, services both bedrooms. The well equipped kitchen has an original stone arch which now serves as a washing up and preparation area. The coup-de-grace is the lovely kitchen garden, perfect for enjoying alfresco meals under blue skies whilst absorbing the village atmosphere.

Peace, tranquility and by-gone days best describe one of the few traditional settlements on the island. Situated six miles from Fira, Megalochori is within easy reach of Akrotiri and many beaches on the island. Today Megalochori has a lively community with a fairly large number of permanent residents, adding to the local flavour and charm.
Megalochori presents a multitude of faces, with narrow roads begging to be explored. Three of the island\'s largest wineries are located here, with excellent tavernas located in the village.

We would definitely recommend the Villa highly. Very well appointed and equipped accommodation. Megalochori is a beautifully restored village and virtually pedestrianised apart from the occasional local in a small car or moped, with little or no traffic past the villa. It\\\'s a short walk to the square with around 8 restaurants within 10 minutes walk and a wonderful bakery (good for lunchtime sandwiches) around 10 minutes walk - this also sells milk water etc and is open long hours. The caldera is in fact only a short walk from the villa so instead of the crowded streets of Oia, far better to take in the sunset here where there were very people and probably a better view. The transfers and hire car were very well organised. Jackie the concierge greeted us in the village on arrival from the airport, booked our outbound taxi and met us on departure. There is a mobile phone to contact Jackie with any issues which was reassuring.

We loved everything about this experience! If you want a feel for a traditional Greek village, this is the place! The living area was spacious and clean. The back yard was completely private and included a swimming pool. The property was walking distance to several restaurants. The concierge, Jackie, was very friendly and helpful. This reservation included transportation from the airport to the property, as well as to our next destination. The driver offered a lot of advice about the best places to visit and eat. He also pointed out all the places of interest during our drives. While staying at the property, we were provided use of a small rental car which gave us the freedom to explore the island. We would recommend this property to anyone seeking a unique and traditional Greek experience.

After spending two days in lovely but very busy Oia, this home was a beautiful change of pace. The pool and flower strewn patio were lovely and the village of Megalochori was charming and quiet. Jackie provided us with everything we needed and offered recommendations for activities to enjoy. The rental car allowed us to explore island highlights such as beaches (Red Beach) and Pyrgos (the view from Franco’s cafe after 6 pm is breathtaking and allows a bird’s eye view of the island). Our favorite restaurant of our stay on Santorini was Metaxi Mas—be sure to make a reservation and ask to be seated on the lower outdoor patio for a beautiful sunset view of the interior part of the the island that some may miss!

The Villa is a beautiful and quiet oasis close enough to Oia and Fira but in the nice quiet little town of Megalachori close to the best wineries and beaches and within walking distance of wonderful wineries and restaurants. The accommodation itself is wonderful with a lot of character, a great rooftop for taking in sunrise and sunsets and a wonderful pool and lounging area. Mansion Sophia was immaculately clean and the staff was very helpful with arranging a catamaran tour (highly recommend) and all other matters. We hope to visit again one day!
