Tips for Traveling and Renting in Costa de Amalfi – Campania Driving in Italy - If you have not driven in Italy before you will probably find it an exciting new experience. Unless you are staying in a major city, you will probably need to rent a car in order to get around. For those not familiar with driving in Italy here are a few pointers
Direction of Traffic - Like the U.S., vehicles keep to the right-hand side of the road in Italy.
Signs / Directions - Often road names and numbers are not used in the countryside. Instead there are direction signs posted at most intersections indicating where the road leads. Blue signs are used for villages or towns, green signs are usually used for the Autostrada (highway) and brown signs are used for other places of interest.
Occasionally there are conflicting signs indicating the same town can be reached by going either left or right at an intersection. This means both roads will reach that destination by different routes. If you are following your progress on a map, you should be able to tell which direction will be more suitable for you.
Circles - Circles, or roundabouts, are much more common than stoplights at intersections in Italy. Right of way at these circles usually goes to the cars which have already entered the circle. Watch for triangular yield signs (a triangle standing on its point), which are posted at the intersection or are painted on the pavement.
When you come into a circle and don´t know which exit to take out of it, consider going around until you find the sign for the town you want. Driving into the busy circle in a village is less stressful if you plan to continue around several times, if necessary, until you have identified and have worked your way over to the right exit point!
Highways - Italy has an excellent highway system which allows easy and fast movement around the country (the speed limit is 120km as of this writing). However, it is a toll road system and the tolls are fairly expensive. You can pay with cash or a credit card, but it is often convenient to have some change available to pay tolls.
Rome - Driving and parking in Rome is a unique experience. You may want to consider using cabs or the subway system (Metropolitana) in Rome rather than dealing with the challenge of driving and parking.
