Where do you want to go?
Casa Maxine is located in the wonderful, medieval village of Portovenere. Portovenere is not only a typical charming Italian village in itself but it also provides the perfect hub for touring the Cinque Terre and the surrounding Poet's Gulf. In fact, the views of the gulf are definitely considered to be one of the highlights of this holiday home. The huge bay windows offer an incomparable view of the Palmaria Island, other villages across the gulf, and the Apuani Mountains, which frame the entire panorama as if in a Renaissance masterpiece!
The apartment is located right across the street from one of the main public beaches in Portovenere. Umbrellas and chairs are available at an extra cost.
The ferry services are a three-minute walk from the apartment along with shopping, restaurants, etc. There is a bus stop just below the building for those wishing to ride into La Spezia.
Up a small flight of stairs is the entrance into the building where Casa Maxine is located on the second floor without elevator. Casa Maxine has been renovated in 2011. Upon entering the apartment immediate attention is drawn to the right where the very spacious living room overlooks a wonderful terrace with views of the Gulf. The generous size of the terrace allows for dining outdoors or just enjoying the view while sunbathing or enjoying a glass of sparkling white wine. To the left is the kitchen, which is well- equipped with a gas stove, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, American coffee maker, and microwave. There are two bedrooms, one of which one offers a queen bed, and the second, twin beds that can be made into a queen. The second bedroom also leads out to the terrace. There are two bathrooms with showers. Casa Maxine is perfect for two couples or a family of four seeking to explore the treasures of Liguria.
In August you'll find many small festivals in Italy. Look for brightly-colored posters for a festa or sagra on weekends in August, where you can usually sample inexpensive regional food. Many Italians take vacations in August, often to the seaside, so you're more likely to find small festivals there. You may run across a medieval festival that includes people dressed in medieval costumes. There are also many outdoor music performances in August. The Miracle of the White Madonna is celebrated with a torchlight procession in the Ligurian seaside village of Portovenere on August 17. The entire village is lit up and candles are placed in the water along the waterfront. It makes for quite a magical sight! The Church of San Lorenzo was built in the 12th century and has a romanesque facade. Damage from cannon fire, the worst in 1494, caused the church and belltower to be rebuilt several times. The 15th century marble alterpiece holds a small painting of the White Madonna. According to legend, the image was brought here in 1204 from the sea and was miraculously transformed into its present form on August 17, 1399.
